New Testament Vocabulary and Labels

Here is the vocabulary I included in my New Testament set to help kiddos learn terms as they read the lessons.

Here is a sample of what the New Testament Book cards from my NT set look like when printed. I hung up a large sheet of paper and we glued the book(s) we read about on each week as a growing list. I went back and added notes to each section (Gospels, Paul's letters, etc.) for clarity.

Revelation

I tried to spend a bit of time talking about how some things in Revelation sound confusing and scary, but we don't need to be worried or afraid.

1, 2, and 3 John

1, 2, and 3 John- I loved this lesson. The three letters are short and are pretty simple for your kids to understand.

Hebrews

This lesson talks about the ins and outs of angels, as mentioned in Hebrews.

Colossians

Colossians has a lot of "don'ts." See if your kids can come up with a list of "do's" using information from this letter.

Philippians

You could have students write their own thank-you letters after reading Philippians!

Ephesians

For Ephesians, I included some things Paul wrote. Your older kids could take a box and figure out where in the book Paul says these things (They aren't word-for-word, so it's great to see if the kids can use a summary to find examples.)

Galatians

For Galatians, I focused on the question of salvation by faith, or salvation by faith and works.

1 and 2 Corinthians

All of the books that have multiples are included together. For Corinthians, information is located on the left and facts about the church in Corinth are written on the right side. I also noticed the kids love the extra graphics, so I'm trying to include more of those.

The clip art I use is Graphics from the Pond and Creative Clips. I use mostly KB fonts. All of it was purchased from Teachers Pay Teachers.

Romans

I thought "The Roman Road" would be a good conversation to have here, so I included it on the right side. The left tells about the book of Romans and what's going on at the time.

Acts

For the Book of Acts, the left side tells about the book and the right side talks about Paul's missionary journeys mentioned in Acts.

Luke

Here is the lesson on the Gospel of Luke. I use NLT (New Living Translation) for the most part, since it's written at a level most kids can read and understand. For older kids, I recommend having several translations available, so discussion about key words can take place.

Mark

Here is our lesson about Mark. The left half tells about the book of Mark. The right half tells about Mark.

Matthew

As I mentioned, I am making a fact sheet for the New Testament books as we go through them, so each child can have a booklet at the end of the year, if they want to keep the sheets together.

We started the first Sunday of July setting the tone for the next 6 months. What is the New Testament? What is the purpose? Why is it important to us? The kids were able to ask questions they had, and I hyped them up a little with "You'll learn about..." comments to get them excited. I had a NT Books puzzle the kids had to solve using the index from a Bible (think: "The first letter of the second book") to solve Why was the New Testament written? and they were so into it they didn't want to stop at noon to go outside for a few minutes as I had told them we could. That makes my heart happy!

The second Sunday we started with the Book of Matthew. I gave the kids a hand-out and had them color specific parts ("color the speech bubble blue as xx reads it aloud") as I read and we talked about the facts. This let them listen but also gave them a specific thing to do which kept their little minds from wandering. The first half tells about the book itself, and the second tells a few facts about Matthew, the tax-collector/disciple/probable author.

The kids asked some really good questions and I was able to go a little deeper than anticipated thanks to the group of kids being a little older than usual. They seemed really excited about learning more!

After I have a few more of these sheets made, I'll probably put them on my Teachers Pay Teachers store so you can snag a copy.

Learning the New Testament

Just as I planned back in December, my kiddos from church spent 6 months learning the books of the Old Testament. Each week we went through 1 (or more, depending) and talked about its importance for people then and now. I really wish I had made a fact-sheet for each one, but that idea didn't come to me until May (The best ideas happen that way!) so I decided I would do that starting in July.

PS- I was SO PROUD of the kids who got up on stage and recited EVERY.SINGLE.OLD TESTAMENT BOOK. in front of the congregation. Many folks mentioned afterward that they wished they knew the books of the Bible that well. You couldn't have dimmed the light on my kids' faces for anything after that! It made them all the more excited to jump into the NT, which is what we're doing now!
